What characterizes entrepreneurship

“An entrepreneur is a person who jumps off a cliff and assembles an airplane on the way down.”
This quote from Reid Hoffman makes a few key things about entrepreneurship clear from my perspective:

1. It takes COURAGE to kick things off.
Sometimes we need to tackle things, even if it seems risky or the outcome is uncertain. The 100% safe option will often not get us far in today’s VUCA world.

2. When in doubt, DO.
When we hesitate, precisely because we don’t yet know all the alternatives, we often decide to LEAVE. Too bad…

3. The belief in SUCCESS.
Having confidence in success is an essential mindset component that actually makes people successful.

4. SOLUTION ORIENTATION.
Jumping first and then figuring out HOW to do it along the way – this is the mindset we need to make reality, which can be difficult to change, positive nonetheless!

5. Trust and CONFIDENCE in one’s own abilities
The entrepreneur jumps because he trusts that he will find a way, that everything will turn out well in the end. He trusts himself, has confidence in himself.

Freely according to the motto of the University of Tuebingen, where I spent my student days:
ATTEMPTO – I dare!
